The new Shopping Centre will be the catalyst to a number of new residential suburbs in the 600+ hectares to be developed over the next 10 to 15 years, which will add impetus to Jeffreys Bay becoming a large town!! The permanent residential component of the town has grown exponentially due to increased tourism opportunities, development, the trend towards remote offices and the lifestyle choice of living in a small town and commuting to the major Centres for business.

Boasting a well established Junior School, plans are in place to develop a High School in the future. There are currently two well established and popular high schools in the Kouga area namely Nico Malan in Humansdorp (Public School) and Woodridge College in Thornhill (Private School) both offering boarding facilities to pupils.

Today it is a holiday and retirement resort designed for the unworried, unhurried, ordinary, sun-soaked beach bashing person. It lies like a precious stone between the Kromme Rivers and Gamtoos and the Seekoei River and Kabeljous Estuaries.

Jeffreys Bay is recognized by the world for its surfing waves with many different surf breaks and safe beaches. Good surfing spots include Kitchen Window, Tubes, Super Tubes, Point and Albatross. These beaches are also known for good angling and fish such as rays, sharks, Dageraad, Baardman, Kob, red Steenbras, Leerfish (Garrick), Grunter, Musselcracker, white Steenbras, Blackmail, Poenskop, Roman, and elf can be expected. Jeffreys can supply calamari in abundance to visitors or residents as it is the hub of the calamari, or 'white gold' industry of the Eastern Cape.

Other recreational activities that can be indulged especially for nature lovers include three nature reserves that are managed by the Cape Nature Conservation. They offer serene and peaceful environments and hiking trails, even though they are relatively small Kabeljous Nature Reserve offers good waterfowl watching, and the Noorsekloof Nature Reserve boasts a 3 km trail up the kloof along a stream. . You can find the Penguin Rehabilitation Centre at the Seekoei Nature Reserve, roughly 120 bird species and some smaller mammals.

There are a few explanations as to where Jeffreys Bay got its name from. Some say that Jeffreys Bay was initially used as a harbor and trading post and was established in 1849 by one, a J.A. Jeffrey, a whale hunter by trade, originally from St. Helena. Another source says that the name was derived from a trader that moved here in 1850. Some say that the name derived from one

Captain Jeffrey when his cargo ship was shipwrecked here and he literally stumbled across the area. As an alternate others say an epidemic of scurvy brake out aboard his ship. He was forced to land his vessel and built a primitive port on what is now the main beach. He apparently erected the first house, a huge double-story mansion that was always known as "The White House" in 1850 and his family became the first White family to settle in the town.

Holidaymakers first began to gather at this lovely shore after a trading store was set up in upper Jeffrey in 1894. It was declared a village management board in 1926, graduating to municipal status in 1968. It has since developed into the enchanting holiday and retirement centre it is today, and has expanded to include Wavecrest, Aston Bay, Marina Martinique, Paradise Beach and Kabeljous areas, and still within a short drive to Port Elizabeth.
